Securing what you just digitized

Operational technology was designed to be air-gapped, physically isolated, and forgotten. Connecting it to a network for real-time monitoring breaks that isolation on purpose, and the security model has to change with it.

A river gauge, a berth sensor, or a building controller that reports data over a cellular or IP connection is, by definition, reachable from further away than the person who installed it ever intended. Default credentials, unpatched firmware, and flat networks that let one exposed device see everything else on it are common, not rare. Search engines built specifically to index exposed industrial control systems find them constantly, and most of what they find was never meant to be public.

This is not a reason to avoid instrumentation. It is a reason to design network segmentation, credential policy, and monitoring alongside the sensor deployment, rather than after an incident forces the conversation.
